Every year, Christians worldwide gather to commemorate Easter, a festival that celebrates the passion of Christ; His death, burial, and resurrection. But Easter is far more than a tradition; it’s a reminder of the profound reality of what Jesus accomplished for humanity. In the words of 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, “Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; he was buried and rose again on the third day.”

Easter is a story of love, sacrifice, and eternal victory… not just Easter Eggs. Let’s dive into the heart of its significance and reflect on why we celebrate it with joyful hearts and unwavering hope.

Why Did Christ Die and Rise Again?

To understand Easter’s impact, we must first ask: Why did Christ die? The Apostle Paul provides the answer in Romans 4:25: “He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.”

This is the very foundation of Easter:

• His death: Jesus died to pay the price for our sins, to bear the burden we could not carry ourselves.
• His resurrection: Jesus rose to give us a clean slate, making us right with God, free from condemnation.

This truth calls us to celebrate! Easter reminds us that the penalty for sin was paid in full by His death and resurrection.

The Journey Through Easter’s Three Days

Easter spans three significant days: the Last Supper, His crucifixion, and His resurrection. Each day reveals God’s unchanging love and redemption for humanity.

1. Thursday: The Last Supper

Thursday is the day we remember Jesus breaking bread with His disciples during the Last Supper. This meal highlights Jesus’ message of love and service. In Mark 14:22-24, Jesus says: “Take, eat; this is my body… This is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many.”

Through this act, Jesus established the new covenant—a promise of eternal forgiveness through His sacrifice. As we remember this meal, we are called to serve one another in love and humility, just as He did.

2. Friday: The Crucifixion

Good Friday marks the day Jesus was crucified. Hanging on the cross, He bore the weight of our sins. Before He gave up His spirit, He cried out: “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” (My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?) (Mark 15:34)

He took our place, becoming the ultimate sacrifice. Unlike the lambs sacrificed in ancient times, Jesus—the Lamb of God—paid the final price for redemption. As John 1:29 declares, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”

Through His stripes, we are healed (Isaiah 53:5)—not only physically, but spiritually. His death opened the door to salvation for all who believe.

3. Sunday: The Resurrection

Sunday is the pinnacle of Easter. On this day, Jesus rose from the grave, triumphing over death and hell. As the Bible states in Acts 2:24: “But God raised Him from the dead, freeing Him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on Him.”

His resurrection is a victory that changed everything:

• Colossians 2:15 reminds us: “Having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.”
• In Revelation 1:18, Jesus proclaims: “I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive forever and ever!”

Because He lives, we celebrate with joy: “O death, where is your sting? O grave, where is your victory?” (1 Corinthians 15:55).

The Hope of Easter
